1 Attachment(s)
Thomas Jefferson was a widower during his presidency, so Lady Liberty will grace his half ounce gold coin

from www.usmint.gov:

This year marks the inaugural year of the First Spouse Gold Coin Series, the United States Mint’s first coin series to feature our Nation’s First Spouses.

Four one-half ounce, $10 24-karat Gold First Spouse Coins will be minted and released annually in the order the spouses served in the White House. The coins will be minted in proof and uncirculated condition and are available individually. Each First Spouse Gold Coin will coincide with the release of the corresponding circulating Presidential $1 Coin. In 2007, the United States Mint will release the first four coins in the series which include Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison.

Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty: The obverse features a reproduction of the Draped Bust Half-Cent obverse, (designed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Robert Scot, 1793-1823), and minted in the early 1800’s. The reverse, designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles Vickers, features President Jefferson’s grave marker at Monticello with the epitaph he requested to reflect his most significant accomplishments.

First Spouse Gold Proof Coins are available in limited mintages. Each First Spouse One-Half Ounce Gold Proof Coin is packaged in a custom-designed domed-chest, highly polished lacquered hardwood presentation case and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint.

Jefferson’s Liberty Coin Maximum Mintage: 40,000 maximum mintage for this design. A maximum of up to 20,000 proof coins, and a maximum of 20,000 uncirculated coins, will be produced.

A limit of one coin per product option per household is in effect for the first week of this product’s release. At the end of this period, the United States Mint will reevaluate this limit and either extend, adjust or remove it.

The Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty Gold Coins will begin shipping in late September. If paying by credit card, please be sure your credit card information remains current to avoid any delays in processing your order. If your credit card has expired by the time of shipment, your order will be cancelled. To update credit card information after an order has been placed, you must call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

To ensure that all members of the public have fair and equal access to United States Mint products, any order placed prior to the official on-sale date and time (August 30, 2007 at 12:00 Noon ET) shall not be deemed accepted by the United States Mint and will not be honored.

Looks to be nice but that's a pretty stiff premium. Very little spread between UC and proof though, only $19 per 1/2 oz or $38 per oz. The spread on Buffaloes is double that isn't it?

Re: Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty Gold Coins on sale Thursday 8/30

The previous two issues (Martha Washington, Abigail Adams) sold out in two hours each time and had a limit of 5 coins of each type per household.

This time the limit was reduced to one coin of each type.

Still, I anticipate the Jefferson's Liberty issue will sell out in a few hours Thursday afternoon.

Are the previous issues selling at a premium?

I just looked over on fleabay. Some of them are being bid up over $500

I think the Jefferson will be different. I anticipate there will be higher demand, and the dealers won't be able to buy 10 for resale.

You may be onto something Ross, I do believe that I will be among the first in line at the US Mint site this next Thursday, 12:00 PM.

US mint site keeps timing out. It may be better to call at this point if you can get through.

Took me 50 minutes but I just did get an order in for the proof coin.

:banghead:

I may try later to order an uncirc, but I may pound my head on the wall first

YES
I got into the mint web a second time. An order for an uncirculated gold coin and also 3 of the bronze medals has been placed. They are still accepting orders, so I assume they aren't sold out yet.

Yeah - I just got in an order for both a proof and uncirculated. Now says ship date as 2007-10-09 , not sure if thats yyyymmdd or yyyyddmm format.

Re: Thomas Jeffersons Liberty Gold Coins on sale Thursday 8/30

It is October 9th. The order that I placed at 12:50 for the proof coin said it would ship 2007-09-24.

At that time I didn't want to bother with the extra mouse clicks to order the uncirc and medals because each mouse click was taking 5 minutes for a response.

Re: Thomas Jeffersons Liberty Gold Coins on sale Thursday 8/30

I understand about the uncirculated. My problem is once I start a set, I want them all and I figure I can sell the unc on ebay to make up some of the difference I will have to pay on Washington and Adams proofs.

Beautiful coins. sorry I missed out on it.. Looks like I'll have to pay a gazillion for one on ebay or live without. Probably buy a krug to drown my sorrows!!!

I've been in the real world for several hours. Just got back and finally got into the website and placed an order for a proof. The order was accepted but is shown as backorder status, just like my 20th Anniversary SAE sets that I never got.

I tried as hard as I could within my time restraints.

Re: Thomas Jeffersons Liberty Gold Coins on sale Thursday 8/30

Sorry, Tom.

I placed an order for the proof coin at 12:50. The order for the uncirc went in about 1:30 and the sales order number from the mint had increased by about 13000. I don't know if the mint gives consecutive order numbers, but if so, that tells me they were almost gone by then. The proofs may have been gone by 1:30 but I didn't check because the site was slow as molasses.

I have a feeling these are going to get expensive on fleabay real soon.

It sickens me that the mint is artificially creating the shortage. It's just an excuse to charge an obscene premium. If I wanted to buy gold with large premiums, I'd buy Britannia coins and NOT support the US mint (soon they'll start casting coins out of plastic with the way metal prices are going, not to mention the Amero).

I can't believe there are already 29 auctions listed on fleabay. NOBODY will have one of these for four weeks!

It really doesn't matter Ross.
Man, I wish I'd seen this thread earlier.
I would estimate that with your purchases today (and anyone else who bought on eof each) you're easily up a grand!!

Those coins are instant collectors darlings with built in rarity. NICE WORK.:applause_:applause_

Jefferson's Liberty NEWS Update

The Coin World magazine arrived today. Sept.17 issue.

The front page article is about the sellout on August 30.

The bad news: The mint has announced that no coins will be shipped until October 30

:thumpdown :thumpdown :thumpdown

Other than that, the article tells us what we already know. The web site and phone lines were swamped.
